The 2019 General Elections in South Africa are upon us. They have been billed as the most closely-contested ever in the short history of the country’s democracy.

 

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) urges voters to cast their ballots with the intention of electing the most suitable leadership, under the circumstances, to manage the country for the next 5 years.

 

Just as we need a strong government that delivers with efficiency and effectiveness, the democratic system of governance, also requires a healthy and responsible opposition.

 

In our view, abstention from voting or a spoilt ballot, is arguably a lost vote in the support of what could be the most beneficial among available options.

 

JUSA does not impose on any individual as to whom to vote for. However, an uninformed vote can potentially be worse than not voting at all.

 

Party manifestos that were presented during the campaign period are detailed and, in some aspects, as one would say, outlandish. It may therefore not be sufficient to make a choice by looking at the manifestos alone.

 

We advocate good governance and the upholding of the rule of law. It is also consistent with the spirit of Islam to vote for a benign leadership. Such a leadership will, among other aspects, not curtail, but promote the civil liberties and the freedoms that we enjoy.

 

Voters should therefore additionally be looking at the capacity to deliver, a commitment to transformation, a track record of promoting inclusiveness and good governance.

 

A worthy vote will be for accountability, growth and development, fair distribution of wealth, social cohesion, anti-racialism, and the upholding of the rule of law.

 

We pray that beyond the elections, South Africa emerges stronger, remains a peaceful abode of all those who live in it, and, a source of inspiration for the rest of world, in prosperity and showcasing unity in diversity.
