Moonsighting: Start of Muharram 1441

There were a number of confirmed reports of the sighting of the new crescent this evening, in several places in South Africa. This means that the year 1440 H has ended with the month of Dhu al Hijja 1440 concluding with 29 days, on Saturday 31 August 2019.

Consequently, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has determined that the 1st of Muharram 1441 corresponds to Sunday 1st September 2019.

If follows then that in South Africa, the Day of Aashura, 10th Muharram 1441 will be on Tuesday 10 September 2019, in-sha-Allah.

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s Central Hilaal Committee acts on behalf of UUCSA in the coordination of the sighting of the moon.

In the light and spirit of the Sunnah, we appeal to jamaats to go out and seek the sighting of the new moon every month. The next sighting of the moon for the determining the start of Safar 1441 shall be after sunset on Sunday 29 September 2019, in-sha-Allah.

Wassalaam.
